How to Play Kids on Brooms

Learn the rules to Kids on Brooms in less than eight minutes with this video! There are six stats in Kids on Brooms, Brains, Brawn, Fight, Flight, Charm, and Grit. You'll assign one of six dice, from the d20 down through the d12, d10, d8, d6, and d4 to each of these stats, with the biggest dice representing your talents, and the smallest representing your weaknesses. In challenging situations, you'll roll the die associated with the stat you're using against a target number set by the game master. If you roll higher than the target number, you succeed! If you fail, you gain adversity tokens, which you can use to benefit you later. Additionally, if you roll the highest value on your die, that die explodes, and you can roll it again and add the result to your total. In combat, this roll is opposed, and the difference in results determines who wins, and how bad it is for the loser.

Kids on Brooms also has a free-form system for casting spells and brewing potions, where you can describe the effect you want to achieve, and the game master sets an appropriate difficulty based on a number of factors, including how powerful this effect is, how familiar you are with the spell, and how long you need it to last, etc. You'll roll as normal to achieve what you want!

What supplies do I need to play Kids on Brooms?
Obviously this will vary from table to table, but here are some good places to start! If your game is played in person, most likely you will want to get a set of dice, something to write with, and paper to take notes. If your game is hosted online instead, you will probably need to make accounts on a few sites for things like character sheets, access to the Virtual Tabletop for maps and tokens, and sites like Discord or Zoom for video/voice calls during the session. You won't always need to have the rulebooks to start, but if you want to read through them to make sure you know all the rules, this might also be a good option.

Knowing every rule of the game may be helpful to some, but many players will learn the game as they play! If you want to read the rules ahead of time you absolutely can, but if you are a hands-on learner you can also just start playing, and if there is something you don’t understand never be afraid to ask questions, because everyone starts somewhere!
What are exploding dice in Kids on Brooms?

When a die explodes, you roll it again and add that roll to the total (e.g. rolling a 5 on that same d8 after an explosion would net you a total of 13). It's possible for a die to explode multiple times, allowing you to rack up a stunning success even with a humble d4!
