Starfinder’s core mechanic is rolling a 20-sided die, adding any bonuses or modifiers from a character’s skills, and comparing the result to a target number set by the game master to determine if a given action succeeds or fails. A character’s abilities come from a combination of their ancestry, class, attributes, and training, all of which players can fully customize from a sprawling selection of options. Starfinder also contains robust rules for fighting monsters and other adversaries, shipbuilding, ship combat, spacefaring adventure, and landing planetside to explore alien locales. In combat, each character gets a turn where they can move, take one standard action, and one swift action. Attacking uses the core mechanic, but the target number is the opponent's armor class, or AC, which may differ between "kinetic" and "energy" attacks. Characters also get reactive "saving throws" to avoid danger from hazards and spells. Starfinder also introduces rules for space battles and ship to ship combat that allow each member of a starship's crew to take actions to lead their ship to victory! Rolling to employ your character's skills uses the core mechanic and is the main way of engaging with noncombat challenges in the game. You might also use high-tech gear or cast magic spells to help solve problems, each of which is detailed and unique in the game's rules. Each member of the crew will have different talents and abilities, which you can combine to overcome challenges in unique and creative ways!
